The link between Envy and Gifts
Shalom brothers and sisters.
It is my belief that envy is a very destructive emotion that very few of us would be willing to admit to having. Envy is the root of many other sins such as jealousy, compulsive gossiping, hatred and murder. A lot of people have a fallacious tendency to view envy and jealousy in tandem but in reality jealousy often precedes envy. In most cases jealousy stems from the threat of losing something you already have while envy occurs when one constantly coverts what another has.
When Moses was giving the ten commandments to the Israelites he commanded them not to covet the belongings of their counterparts (Exodus 20:17). Did you know that out of all the 10 commandments this is the only law that solely puts a prohibition on one's state of mind? It is not by coincidence that The Most High decided to outlaw covertness.
Envy is caused by a number of things, usually it is based on one's own insecurities and we see this with the media and entertainment industry propagating standards of what success should look like. The spirit of envy usually stems from one not investing adequate time and energy focusing on the purpose that The Most High ordained for them. This results in most people diverting their attention to "hating" on others, just look at the case in the incident between Cain and Abel.
The story of Cain and Abel provides an important perspective on the issue of envy. Cain decided to kill his own Abel because The Most High looked upon his brother with favour. A lot of people have come across this story countless times but very few understand the nuances embedded in this incident.
According to the scriptures, Cain was jealous of the attention The Most High was giving to Abel. His hatred of his brother even reached to the point where The Most High had to warn him that if he did not do what was right, sin would be crouching at his door and desire to rule over him (Genesis 4:7). In simple terms, The Most High was advising Cain that if he had invested more time and energy in cultivating his own gift, The Most High would have treated him in the same manner as he did to his brother. While it is true that both brothers offered equal amounts of offering to The Most High, one did so by faith and the other didn't (Hebrews 11:4). This story is a testament to the fact that people can become envious of another because of The Most High blessings to the other who diligently uses his or her gifts in the way The Most High prefers.
Some people nowadays are spending way too much time on social media being embroiled in other people's lives to the point where they are losing focus of what they should be doing with their own lives. It's not a surprise that research has shown that cutting back on social media platforms such as Facebook and Snapchat reduces depression. That is why the scriptures make it clear that " a sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones"(Proverbs 14:30). A lot of people are depressed and figuratively rotting inside because they are consumed with having what other people have.
The scriptures make it clear that "wrath is cruel, anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before jealousy" (Proverbs 27:4). This verse is meant to illustrate just how powerful envy can become.
When one is wrathful and angry towards someone, there is normally a sense of predictability. You often know what to expect from a person who is outwardly angry towards you but when dealing with an envious person there is an element secrecy and collusion. Cain premeditated his brother's death by luring him to the field where he killed him therefore a lot of people who are envious of you are probably smiling at you every morning and giving you compliments but you don't know their true intentions.
Envy has also resulted in the children of The Most High departing from his teachings. The scriptures advise us not to envy sinners and to fear The Most High instead (Proverbs 23:17). The Israelites did not harken to this because they started engaging in the Pagan practices and traditions of their oppressors (that is why some of us celebrate abominable holidays such as Christmas and Easter, a topic I will cover in future).
The Most High wants us to be invested in the fruit of the Spirit such as love, joy and faithfulness and depart from fleshly fruits of envy, jealousness and selfish ambition (Galatians 5:18-23).
Keep an eye on the spirit of envy.
